The Community Services committee is proud to sponsor two projects this year, an international project for the Rainbow Primary School in Hyderabad, India, www. rainbowprimaryschool.com and a local project for the Atlanta Day Shelter. We will be sending home information about both projects this month and will have tables at the Fall Fling for more information and to receive donations for both. After the Fling, bins will be located on the first and second floors from November 3 - 22 to collect items for the shelter. Please take a look at http://atlantadayshelter.org/donations.html for additional items needed. Our Rainbow Primary School project will focus on collecting change all year to raise funds to bring electricity to this new school. Check out our new and improved teaching garden and outdoor classroom space. Our new Adventure teacher, Erin Pagliaro, brought in the tree stumps and Ms. Alice and Erin’s class decorated the area with recycled materials. They painted hubcaps, disassembled and decorated an old ceiling fan. Parents have donated bird feeders, bird seed, and soil. Every morning Ms. Erin and Ms. Alice’s class have been weeding, digging, collecting bugs, but have sited Cardinals and other birds as well. This summer Ms. Gail had all the summer campers participate in painting and decorating the picnic tables. Ms. Erin, Ms. Archie, and Ms. Ashley have formed a teacher Gardening Club and made plans for the teaching garden. Many of the classes are working on planting a winter vegetable garden as well as planting bulbs for the spring. Also, in the works are plans for a school wide Scarecrow project to decorate the outdoor space for Fall. As you can see there’s a lot happening in the Garden. Recently the Kindergarten class painstakingly planted beet seeds to return the next day and discover they had all been dug up. Please help us maintain the garden area by adhering to the following rules with your children:
1. Always have adult supervision if your child is in this area after hours. Much time and energy have gone into the digging and planting and the children are anxiously waiting to see their seeds grow.
2. Do not remove the toys from the sand table.
3. Please do not pick the flowers.
Children LOVE to be outside and they need lots of time to explore outdoors. Also, happening in the outdoor area at DHUMP - not only the playground, garden, and outdoor classroom, but every Monday teacher, David Epstein, supervises children at play in the riding toy area. The children love having their choice of a tractor, sports car or just pretending to fill the car with gas. See the slideshow below:

Preschool Tip of the Month
Please have your child arrive in their classroom on time. Class begins at 9:30. This helps reduce the crying and encourages a smooth transition for everyone. If your child cries during drop off we recommend a hug, a kiss and reassurance that you will pick them up later–then make a quick exit. We will contact you if there is a problem.
If you would like to place a few lines in the on-line News & Views we are happy to mention your personal business and only request a donation to our scholarship fund.
Thursday Evening, August 28th
7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
We will begin with a large group meeting in the church sanctuary. There you will meet the Preschool staff, PTA presidents and other important members of our preschool community.
Next we will break-up and move to your child’s classroom where you will meet your child’s teachers and have a chance to ask questions at this adults only meeting. Class lists will be posted in the hallways. We do not publicize class lists prior to parent orientation.

10:00- 10:45 a.m. MWF, M-F class groups
11:00 - 11:45 a.m. T/Th class groups
The Meet and Greet is a great opportunity to introduce your child to his or her teachers and new classroom. Parents remain with their children during the Meet and Greet. Please remember that this is a time for the children and not an appropriate time for parent meetings with the teacher. If you have special concerns that you would like to discuss with the teacher you should bring them up at Parent Orientation on Thursday evening, August 30th or make arrangements through the preschool office for an alternative meeting time with your child’s teacher.
Tuesday, September 2nd first day of school for T/Th and M-F classes
Wednesday, September 3rd first day of school for MWF classes
Your child’s September tuition payment is due the first week of school. You may utilize our online payment or mail your September payment to DHUMP, 1200 Ponce de Leon Avenue, Atlanta, Georgia 30306. Please make sure checks submitted by your bank’s online bill pay read DHUMP or Druid Hills UM Preschool. Checks made out to Druid Hills United Methodist are often misidentified as Church payments or donations.
Beginning a new school year is a fun and exciting time. In addition to bringing your child to the Meet and Greet you may want to plan a morning outing with your child to visit our playground and have a snack at the picnic tables. Visiting the classroom area is not recommended since we are “under construction” in preparation for the new school year. If you have any special, or not so special questions or inquiries please email mwaterbury@dhump.org.
We look forward to seeing all of you at Parent Orientation and getting our school year off to a great start!
